Can I Get Travel Vaccinations at My Local Pharmacy in Ireland?

Some pharmacies in Ireland can administer travel vaccines, but only after you have had a travel health consultation and received a prescription from a doctor elsewhere. Travel vaccines are prescription-only medicines in Ireland, and pharmacists cannot prescribe them. Many pharmacies do not offer a travel vaccine service at all, and those that do generally cannot give the yellow fever vaccine, which is only available at certified Yellow Fever Vaccination Centres.

That means a pharmacy is rarely a one-stop option for travel vaccines. Many travellers find it simpler to start at a specialist travel health clinic, where the consultation, prescription and vaccines are all handled in one place. Tropical Medical Bureau (TMB) has specialised in travel medicine in Ireland since 1988, caring for hundreds of thousands of travellers through 22 clinics nationwide and virtual consultations.

The short answer Every travel vaccine needs a consultation and a prescription first. Pharmacists in Ireland cannot prescribe travel vaccines. Many pharmacies do not offer travel vaccines. Those that do, usually rely on you booking a separate consultation, often with an online doctor. Yellow fever vaccine is not available in most pharmacies. It can only be given at a certified Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre, and some countries require proof of it for entry. Going pharmacy-first can mean two or three appointments and fees. A specialist travel health clinic like TMB provides the consultation, prescription and vaccines in one place.

Can a pharmacist give travel vaccinations in Ireland?

A pharmacist can administer some travel vaccines, but only once a doctor has assessed you and issued a prescription. Pharmacists in Ireland cannot carry out the travel health consultation or prescribe travel vaccines themselves.

The Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (PSI), the pharmacy regulator, confirms that trained pharmacists can supply and administer flu, pneumococcal, shingles and COVID-19 vaccines without a prescription. Travel vaccines such as hepatitis A, typhoid, rabies, cholera and Japanese encephalitis are not on that list. Pharmacists have recently gained limited prescribing rights under the Department of Health’s Common Conditions Service, but these cover eight minor conditions only, and do not include vaccines.

Pharmacy travel vaccine services therefore work in two steps: you first have a consultation with a doctor, often through a separate online service, and then bring the prescription to the pharmacy for the pharmacist to administer.

Do I need a consultation before getting travel vaccines in Ireland?

Yes. Every travel vaccine in Ireland requires a consultation with a doctor and a prescription before it can be given, wherever you receive it. This is a legal requirement because travel vaccines are prescription-only medicines, and it is also good medical practice.

The right vaccines for you depend on far more than the country you are visiting. A travel health consultation looks at:

  • Every country and region on your itinerary, including stopovers
  • Your travel dates and how long you will spend in each place
  • Your accommodation and activities, such as trekking, diving, rural travel or visiting family
  • Your previous vaccinations and any boosters that may be due
  • Your medical history, regular medication, pregnancy or immune conditions

At TMB, this consultation is carried out by a doctor who specialises in travel medicine, using a specialist travel medicine database alongside current guidance from the HSE, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Why might I need two consultations if I go to a pharmacy?

Because a pharmacy cannot provide the consultation, prescription or yellow fever vaccine, some travellers end up booking a consultation in one place, getting vaccinated in another, and then needing a third appointment at a specialist clinic. Each step can come with its own fee.

A common pathway looks like this:

  1. The traveller books an online doctor consultation to get a prescription for travel vaccines.
  2. They bring the prescription to a pharmacy that offers a travel vaccine service.
  3. They then discover their destination requires or recommends yellow fever vaccination, which the pharmacy cannot provide.
  4. They book another consultation at a Registered Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre, paying a second consultation fee.

Having your whole itinerary assessed at a specialist travel health clinic from the start avoids this. At TMB, your consultation, prescriptions and vaccines, including yellow fever, can be completed with one provider, usually on the same day.

Can I get the yellow fever vaccine at a pharmacy in Ireland?

Generally, no. The yellow fever vaccine can only be given at a certified Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre (YFVC), and most pharmacies do not hold this certification or stock the vaccine. Under the International Health Regulations, only certified centres can administer the vaccine and issue the International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP). In Ireland, centres are certified under guidance from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC).

Yellow fever is a risk in parts of tropical Africa and South America. A number of countries require proof of yellow fever vaccination for entry, some from every arriving traveller and others from travellers arriving from or transiting through risk areas. Without a valid ICVP, you can be refused entry, vaccinated at the border or placed in quarantine.

TMB’s Registered Yellow Fever Vaccination Centres can assess whether you need the vaccine, give it and issue your ICVP during the same visit.

What is the difference between a pharmacy and a specialist travel health clinic for travel vaccines?

A pharmacy travel vaccine service administers vaccines that have been prescribed elsewhere. A specialist travel health clinic like TMB provides the full service: a consultation with a travel medicine doctor, prescriptions, vaccination, yellow fever certification and ongoing support, all with one provider.

Can I have a virtual travel health consultation and get my vaccines at a clinic?

Yes. TMB offers virtual travel health consultations, so you can speak with a TMB travel medicine doctor from home and then visit your nearest TMB clinic for your vaccines. Unlike a pharmacy pathway, your prescription and vaccination stay with the same specialist provider, including yellow fever where it is needed.

This suits busy travellers, students, people living outside a major town and anyone who wants to plan ahead. After your virtual consultation, you book a short vaccination visit at any of TMB’s 22 clinics.

What if my travel vaccine has already been prescribed?

If a doctor has already prescribed your travel vaccine, a pharmacy that offers a travel vaccine service may be able to administer it. Contact the pharmacy first to confirm it can give that vaccine and has it in stock.

Before you go ahead, check that your prescription covers your whole itinerary, including yellow fever if your trip passes through a risk area, and whether any vaccine is part of a multi-dose course. If anything is missing, or you need further vaccines, any TMB clinic can review your plan and complete your vaccinations.

How far in advance should I arrange my travel vaccinations?

Ideally, book your travel health consultation 4 to 6 weeks before you travel. Some vaccines need more than one dose, and most need time to build protection before you arrive. Booking with a specialist clinic early also means you only need to organise one set of appointments.

If you are leaving sooner, you should still book. A TMB doctor can advise which vaccines and precautions are still worthwhile before departure, including malaria tablets and other travel prescriptions.

Where can I get travel vaccinations in Ireland?

The most convenient option is a specialist travel health clinic, where you can have your consultation, prescription and vaccines in one place. Travel vaccines are also available through GPs and, once prescribed, from some community pharmacies.
